The Soul and DNA of a Business: Why They’re So Important

Leadership
Vision & Strategy

Some companies feel alive.

You walk in and you just know. There’s a buzz. People give a damn. Problems don’t linger, they get solved. Everyone’s rowing in the same direction — and they want to be there.

Other companies? They feel flat. Heavy. Like they’re going through the motions. Good people, decent systems — but no spark. No soul.

That’s the difference the soul of a business makes.

What is the soul of a business?

It’s not on your org chart. It’s not in your KPI dashboard. But it’s everything

The soul of a business is the living energy that drives it forward. It’s the human heartbeat behind performance — the thing that makes strategy matter and execution stick. You can’t systemize it, but when it’s missing, everyone feels it.

In the Momentum Framework, we see soul as the outcome when four core pillars come alive and work in harmony:

Healthy = Character

This is who your business really is — not who it says it is. It shows up in culture, leadership, and how people treat each other. It’s in the behaviors that get recognized (and tolerated), and whether your values show up when it’s inconvenient. Great character means alignment, trust, and a team that shows up on the hard days — not just the easy ones.

Smart = Intent

This is the why and where. Businesses with soul have a vision worth chasing, a strategy that matters, and priorities that align with purpose — not just profit. Intent without soul becomes performative. It looks good on a slide, but it doesn’t move people. Real intent connects. It inspires. It gives the day to day meaning.

Disciplined = Willpower

Willpower isn’t about having a playbook. It’s about using it when everything hits the fan. It’s the daily grit to show up, follow through, and do the hard things — especially when morale is low, pressure is high, or nobody’s watching. Soulful companies don’t fold when it gets tough. They dig in. They rally. They care enough to fight through it. They hold each other accountable not because it’s a checkbox — but because the work matters. That’s willpower with soul.

Growing = Vitality

Vitality is the spark that keeps a business from coasting. It’s curiosity, learning, adaptation. It’s trying something new even when it’s easier to rinse and repeat. Soulful businesses grow — not just in size, but in wisdom. They pulse with energy, not burnout. They evolve, stretch, and get sharper over time.

When all four are strong and in sync, the business doesn’t just function — it comes alive

Soul vs. DNA: What’s the Difference?

Here’s where people get confused. They think that the soul and DNA of a business are the same. But they’re not.

Your business DNA is your foundation. It’s the core code that defines what you are: your values, your methodology, your non-negotiables. Think of DNA business meaning as your blueprint — the genetic makeup that stays consistent whether you’re a 5-person startup or a 500-person company.

But here’s the thing about DNA meaning business leaders miss: DNA without soul is just structure. It’s like having a perfect skeleton with no heartbeat.

Soul is what brings that DNA to life. It’s the energy, the passion, the spark that makes people care about that blueprint. Your DNA tells you what you are. Your soul determines how alive you are.

Companies can have great DNA and still feel dead inside. But when soul and DNA work together? That’s when magic happens.

Soul in Action: Examples of Soul in Business

You can feel when a business has soul — and when it doesn’t. It’s not about size, fame, or how slick the branding is. It’s about how alive the business is from the inside out.

Here are four businesses that tell the story:

Patagonia — Soul as a Brand Superpower

Patagonia’s soul isn’t an accident. It’s baked into their DNA. They exist to protect the planet, and they put that mission ahead of profits — repeatedly. They’ve run anti-consumption ad campaigns. Donated their entire company to climate causes. Backed up bold statements with bold actions.

It shows up in:

  • Employees who live the mission
  • Customers who believe in the brand like it’s a cause
  • A culture that doesn’t compromise

Patagonia isn’t just a company — it’s a movement. That’s what soul can do.

MEC — When You Sell the Soul, You Lose the Spark

Mountain Equipment Company was Canada’s soul of the outdoors. It was a member-owned co-op, loved and trusted for putting people and purpose first.

Then the co-op sold to a private investor. The shift was instant.

What changed?

  • The culture went quiet.
  • The values on the wall stopped showing up in decisions.
  • Longtime employees and loyal customers could feel it: this wasn’t their MEC anymore.

The lesson? You can’t fake soul — and once you lose it, getting it back takes more than a rebrand.

London Drugs — Quiet Soul, Big Heart

London Drugs doesn’t shout its values. But walk into one and you’ll find employees who’ve been there for 10+ years, know their customers by name, and actually care. Behind the counter is a culture that prioritizes community, respect, and long-term relationships.

You see it in:

  • Staff loyalty and real customer service
  • Support for local artists, charities, and green initiatives
  • A consistent experience that feels human — not corporate

London Drugs isn’t sexy. It’s soulful.

Intuition Liners — Comfort is the Soul

Intuition doesn’t just make ski boot liners. They make skiing feel right. Their soul is built around one promise: unmatched comfort. From pros to weekend warriors, they’ve quietly become the gold standard — because nothing else feels this good.

It shows up in:

  • A fanatical obsession with materials and design — every liner is dialed for warmth, fit, and feel
  • Personal, real-world customer support (often from skiers themselves)
  • A humble but passionate team that skis, rides, and builds for people like them
  • A global cult following built on word of mouth, not marketing

The product performs — but the comfort is what customers remember. That’s soul, sewn into every stitch.

Common Threads in Businesses with Soul

  • They’re clear on why they exist — and act like it.
  • Their leaders don’t just say the values — they live them.
  • Systems are aligned with culture, not in conflict with it.
  • People give a damn. About the work. About each other. About the mission.
  • Rituals, stories, and shared ownership keep it alive.

You don’t need 50 culture hacks. You need alignment, intention, and leadership with backbone.

Can You Coach a Company to Have Soul?

Yes — but not by teaching a system.

When I started my coaching journey, I focused heavily on the tools. You need the tools. They’re important. But tools without soul? That’s just a machine. ‘Smart’ without ‘soul’ doesn’t become great — it becomes cold. Controlled. Checked out.

You coach soul by reigniting passion. By helping the leadership team reconnect with why they’re doing this in the first place. By turning stale rituals into real energy. By reminding people what it feels like to care again. And by bringing the tools to life — because frameworks give you structure, but soul makes them work. That’s the step after the logical — the part most systems never teach.

That moment when someone on the team sits up, lights up, and says,

“Damn, I actually want to build something great again.”

That’s the spark.

Tools don’t create that. But great coaching can.

That’s the work I love most. It’s not just installing the system.

It’s bringing the business — and its people — back to life.

Want help re-igniting the soul of your business? That’s building a GREAT business.
