I started my first IT business years ago. I knew what I was doing. I was good at it, and that’s why I saw some initial success. I wasn’t making millions, but it was nothing to sneeze at either. Eventually, I hit a plateau. The one thing I didn’t know how to do was take my business to the next level.
I was burning out. Working 10 hours a day. I lost touch with the things I loved. My hobbies. My family. They all took a back seat to my business, where I was the sales guy, the bookkeeper, the client manager, and even the janitor. This was no way to live.
My Biggest Mistake – Not Paying for Small Business Coaching
You might be a genius in your field. You might be doing incredible work, pushing boundaries, and innovating at every turn. But even the most brilliant minds need guidance.
Picture this: you’re trekking through a dense forest. You’ve got the skills, the tools, and the drive to reach your destination, but you’re struggling to find the right path. A small business coach is like a seasoned guide who knows the forest well and can show you the quickest, safest route to your goal.
What small business coaching does is allow you to understand which stage of business you are at and what exactly you need to do to get to the next level. And at each stage, you, the business owner, have different objectives.
So, what are these stages of business?
Identify the Stage of Your Journey
Solopreneur
At this stage, you’re doing everything yourself. You’re the CEO, janitor, accountant, and everything in between. It’s an exhilarating phase where you’re building your business from the ground up, but it can also be incredibly overwhelming.
Imagine waking up early to handle client meetings, then switching gears to clean the office, followed by crunching numbers late into the night. Every decision, every responsibility, fall on your shoulders. It’s a true test of your resilience and dedication. You’re the ultimate multitasker, and while it’s empowering, it’s also exhausting.
Grow Up
The next stage is when you start to transition from being a one-person show to a small business. This is where you begin to hire and manage people. It’s a challenging shift because it requires you to let go of some control and trust others to help carry the load.
Scale Up
Now you’re really growing. You have a team of 20, 50, or even 100 people. This stage is all about developing leadership within your organization, refining your HR strategies, and honing your overall business strategy. You need to ensure that your team is aligned with your vision and capable of executing it effectively.
Enterprise
You’ve made it to the big leagues. Your business now has multiple departments, and decisions pass through several levels before execution. It’s a complex structure that requires robust systems and processes to keep everything running smoothly. Think of it as steering a massive ship – every department is a part of the crew, and you’re the captain.
Scaling Your Grow Up (Small Business)
Start With Strategic Hiring
One common mistake small businesses make is opportunistic hiring. You might hire Bob because he can do everything reasonably well. He’s reliable, hardworking, and never complains, but he’s no rockstar. Instead of hiring the first person who comes along, you need to hire the RIGHT person.
This is very hard for solopreneurs and grow ups, who need skills when they need them.
Being smart about hiring is a force multiplier. One A player is worth 5 or more C players.
Find Clarity
Ask yourself this: What do I really want from this business? Finding clarity isn’t about having some amazing, well-thought out, long-term strategy. It’s about identifying what ‘winning’ looks like to you.
What is it that you really want? More time with family and loved ones? More free time to spend on your hobbies? Vacations. Put these on a vision board and come back to it. Remind yourself that these are the things that truly matter.
Make Your Business Serve YOU!
Your business should serve your life goals, not the other way around. Simply aiming to build a multi-million-dollar business isn’t enough. You can achieve that, but at what cost? Losing your life to endless work isn’t worth it, believe me.
Imagine you’ve built a successful business, but you’re missing out on family dinners, weekends, and holidays. Your child’s recital comes and goes, but you’re stuck in the office. This is not the life you envisioned. Your business should be a tool that enables you to live your best life, not a chain that keeps you bound.
Buy Back Your Time

What you MUST do is find your “zone of genius.” This is where your passion, skills, and business needs intersect. Spend your time where these three areas overlap, and hire others to handle the rest.
For example, if your strength is in strategic planning and innovation, focus on that. Hire a bookkeeper, a sales team, and administrative staff to take care of the other tasks. This way, you’re not just working harder; you’re working smarter. Your time is too valuable to be spent on tasks that others can do just as well, if not better.
Start Outsourcing
Outsourcing is all about buying back your time. Consider the time you spend on tasks that don’t add value to your business. If you spend 8 hours a week on these tasks, imagine what you could do with that time instead.
If it only costs $400 to buy back 8 hours of your time, is it worth it? Imagine what you could do with 8 extra hours. You can take a family day at the park. Take your wife on that vacation she’s always wanted. Re-discover your passion for playing the guitar. The passion you lost when you first started this business.
Conclusion
In my journey from an entrepreneur, then getting into small business coaching, I’ve learned the importance of having the right support at the right time. Small business coaching can be that crucial support, helping you navigate the complexities of growing your business while ensuring it aligns with your personal goals.
Don’t make the mistake I did. Invest in a coach and watch your business—and your life—transform. Your business journey doesn’t have to be a lonely one. With the right guidance, you can achieve your dreams and live a fulfilling life.
