In January, our learning communities met to share lessons learned from Limitless by Jim Kwik.
We picked this as our first book as it lays a fantastic foundation for our learning journey, helping us overcome any mindset issues, read faster and remember far more.
Book Summary
Jim Kwik is your brain and learning coach. His book has 4 distinct parts:
- His journey (which is quite compelling)
- Mindset
- Motivation
- Methods
For those who have done brain-training stuff before, much of this book wasn’t new. It is extremely well organized and written, making it accessible to anyone.
Mindset
In this section, the author talks about how we all have limiting beliefs. Based on the discussion in the book club, this is a major factor for everyone.
I loved the fact that he explains that we are ALL geniuses and that genius isn’t all about IQ. Like Patrick Lencioni’s work on Working Genius, this book discusses different kinds of genius. Most importantly, genius is something we can develop.
Motivation
Understanding WHY you’re learning something is vital to your learning journey. It’s easy to give up if learning isn’t aligned with your why.
Methods
Being the tactical type, this was my favorite part. Jim provides science-based methods to improve memory, digest more information, speed read, improve your thinking and study methods.
A-ha moments
The book club had so many a-ha moments from this book. Here’s some:
- Need a meditation practice
- Kill your ANTS (Automatic negative thoughts)
- Memory can be trained
- Brain needs energy – brain foods
- Use stories and visualization for memory
- Everyone is a genius
- Casting yourself in the hero’s journey
- Your mindset is your biggest limitation
